Code Blue was named PBR World Champion Bull, but who is Code Blue? I am proud to bring you a little bit closer to Code Blue.
Code Blue is a light colored bull, known for to be athletic, strong, with a high-kicking bucking pattern, and Code Blue is also known as an explosive spinner. Code Blue is co-owned by four men… Rick Wagoner, Jimmy Walton, Chad Berger and Clay Struve.
Chad Berger had this to say about Code Blue “Everywhere that he’s gone, he’s shown up and has done his job to the best of his ability. He’s never had a bad day. He’s an amazing animal. He shoots forward and gets guys reared back and he whips them out of there.”
Clay had this to share “He’s an athlete. He’s getting smarter as he goes. He’s very fair. He’s given us a good ride. If they stay on him, they’re going to set records with him. That’s what we’re looking for when we bring bulls to events. I’m thinking that we’re talking big, big points when the times comes.”
And that time will come. But right now, he’s getting better faster than they’re figuring him out.”
Jimmy’s thoughts on Code Blue… “He’s smarter than people give him credit for. But Rick and I give him all of the credit because he’s just that type of bull.”
Code Blue exploded onto the PBR scene in January of 2009, in Winston-Salem, NC. Since then no bull rider has unlocked Code Blue’s secret to being a great bucking bull. In fourteen outs, Code Blue has never been ridden.
PBR President and founder, Ty Murray had these words to share He’s the total package. He’s big. He’s strong. He’s stout and he’s smart. He jumps high, kicks hard, spins fast. He’ll get rode. Sometimes it takes people awhile to find out the combination. But if they keep running a bull in there, their combination is going to get found out.”
Daisy Rookie of the Year, Cody Nance, attempted to ride Code Blue in Round 5 of the PBR World Finals. But, Cody only lasted 4.3 seconds. Cody had this to say about Code Blue “He’s a bucking son-of-a-gun. That bull, he’s got everything that it takes to be Bull of the Year. He’s real athletic and he’s big and strong and he’s got the attitude.”
During the eighth and final around of this year’s PBR World Finals, Austin Meier attempted to ride Code Blue. Austin managed to hang on for 6.5 seconds; Code Blue was awarded a score of 47.50 points. It was this amazing score that would write Code Blue into the PBR history books as 2009 World Champion Bull.

This is the final round, the round that will determine who the PBR World Champion would be. PBR livestock director Cody Lambert had this to say “They’ve got to ride two today and I like their chances on the first one, but when it comes to that short go there are some bulls in there that could mess it up. But with those three guys coming in six for six, I think, at least one of them will ride all eight.” Cody was referring to Kody Lostroh, J.B. Mauney, Valdiron de Oliveira.
Robson Palermo has also ridden all his bulls, but received a no score on one, for touch the bull with his free hand. Cody’s comment was this, “Robson is our Finals champion last year and this year he’s ridden all his bulls, he just got a no score on one for touching him on with his free hand. It was a correct call, the bull pulled him down a little bit and his free arm went over the bull’s neck and he touched him, but he’s still been on every one of them at the 8-second mark. He’s tough.”
Kody Lostroh and J.B. Mauney made the PBR World Finals this year one of the closest races ever in the sixteen years of the PBR. Kody and J.B. had an amazing 2009 season… they were the only two riders to hold the top spot in the standings for the entire season, which included thirty one Built Ford Tough Series events, and lets not forget ten intense days in Las Vegas for the PBR World Finals.
The round to determine the PBR World Champion got started as soon as the number crunchers crunched the numbers one last time, to make sure everything was correct. PBR fans also were told that James, the safety man who rides the white horse Joe, will retire Joe after the World Finals this year. Joe has been with James as a pick-up and PBR horse for seventeen years. A tip of the hat to Joe, he has earned his retirement.
The riders for the final round are Kody Lostroh, J.B. Mauney, Valdiron de Oliveira, Roy, Aaron Roy Robson Palermo, Austin Meier, Dustin Elliott, Caleb Sanderson, Shane Proctor, Ednei Caminhas, Ross Coleman, Kasey Hayes, Josh Koschel, McKennon Wimberly, and Pete Farley. So which bulls would meet these top fifteen riders? Those bulls would be the rankest and toughest bulls the PBR has to offer. Big Tex, The Game, Major Payne, Spit Fire, Chicken on a Chain, Necessary Evil, Paycheck, Crosswired, Master Feeds Show Stopper, Code Blue, Uncle Buck, Red Bone, Unabomber, Black Pearl, Voodoo Child.
The Thomas and Mack was sold out on Sunday, and again the bulls and bull riders did not disappoint their fans. The eighth and Final round was filled with excitement, the dashing of dreams, and the fulfillment of others. Only three riders rode their bulls for the eight seconds, McKennon Wimberly, Shane Proctor, and J.B. Mauney.
J.B. Mauney made PBR history as being the only man to all eight of his bulls at the PBR World Finals. A record that will never be broken, in 2010 the PBR World Championship will change from two weekends to five consecutive days. J.B. Mauney rode Black Pearl for 93.75 points, which was highest mark earned during the PBR World Finals this year, to win the final round. But, it was not enough to win the Championship.
J.B. Mauney did not win the PBR World Championship, but he did win the World Finals average championship and a check for $250,000. PBR President and founder, Ty Murray had this to say in respect to J.B. Mauney, “J.B. has the confidence because he works at it. He gets on a lot of practice bulls and he develops confidence the same way you have a lot of confidence when you study for a test. I also think that J.B. has the right amount of swagger. And swagger is different than confidence. But it’s something that’s very important in this sport because you’re talking about the most dangerous sport and a sport where the odds are stacked against you. So, confidence and swagger is very important and J.B. has it. J.B. does a great job of riding in pressure situations without locking up.”
Kody Lostroh was crowned the 2009 PBR World Champion. J.B. Mauney had this to say about Kody’s winning the World Champion title, “I did all I could and he came out on top, and he’s the World Champion. He’s the best bull rider in the world.”
The 2009 PBR World Finals also saw the crowing the Daisy Rookie of the Year, Cody Nance from Tennessee, and Code Blue was named PBR World Champion Bull. The young and up and coming bull superstar Black Pearl, won the 2009 ABBI Classic Bull Competition. Pure Smoke took first place in the 2009 ABBI Futurity Bull Competition.
